Cant remove voice echo on GarageBand 10.4.2

I have seen a string of questions asking how to do this, but referring to earlier versions of GarageBand. I have found all the echo and reverb settings and have turned them all off, and I am recording in a room with lots of soft furnishings, but I still get a very strong echo. I am speaking close into the microphone. I cannot seem to shake it with any settings. I have tried adjusting the track and adjusting the Master. I have turned all the settings off. I am using natural voice. Any ideas?

Hi Geiger!

I may have found a solution for you via the attached quick '90 seconds' YouTube video link: https://youtu.be/mZob1lPNuB4

It's called 'GarageBand Tutorial: How to Turn Off Hidden Echo and Reverb' with Toby Ryan. Though I do not know Toby personally, judging from the comments from others, some consider him a saint for the insights provided.

By default, Garageband has reverb turned on via the 'plug-in' settings whenever you start a new project. So, yes, you have to follow these steps every time you start a new project. But wait...

There's a bonus, in the last 20 seconds of the video, Toby explains how to create a 'custom preset' with all of the reverb settings turned off ahead of time. This a game changer (time saver), and I hope it works for you?

If this takes care of the question you initially asked, please respond so others in the community that land here will know we've got them covered. And more importantly, to know it helped you... awesome!

(Note: I followed/tested these steps directly in the most recent update of Garageband 10.4.3. I also have a Blue Snowball mic, and have used the built-in internal mic when traveling. But in my home studio, I use both dynamic & condenser mics with an audio interface to maximize sound recording quality.)

Hello, Geiger!

Thanks for your post. It sounds like you are trying to find out why you hear an echo in GarageBand, and you want to know how to stop it. We're glad that you reached out to the Apple Support Communities. We want to try and help get you pointed in the right direction.

To start, are you using the Mac built-in microphone or one that you've connected to the Mac? If possible, test to see if the issue is present with a different mic.

Do you notice if the echo is present within other apps on your Mac? If you're unsure, test to see if you hear the echo in other apps.

The answers to these questions can help further isolate the issue to the app, mic, or Mac. We hope you find this information helpful.

Take care!

Hi Nicholas. I seem to have minimised it somewhat by choosing Natural Vocal, though even that gave me some echo and reverb. I was able to turn this down in the settings, and this produced a better result, but I could not ameliorate the effect using classic vocal or narration vocal, as I suspect might be possible. I seem to have the same problem on the internal mic and also my external Blue Snowball. Thanks for looking into this. Andrew
