AirPods make me sounds like a robot on zoom and facetime, but only when I am on my computer

Hi,

Whenever I use my AirPods with my MacBook Pro, people tell me I sound like a robot. I keep them clean so I know it's not that and whenever I use them with my phone I sound fine. I am not sure what I should do.

Hello Emilie,

AirPods are a great accessory, and ensuring that they're working as expected with your Mac, and being told you're sounding robotic. To clarify a bit further does this happen with all apps and functions? For example, if you have call forwarding set up on the Mac does it happen with traditional phone calls, FaceTime calls, or when using a conferencing app?

If you're unsure try recording a memo in the Voice Memos application, and playing the audio back to see if the issue continues. Also, make sure that the audio input is correct in System Preferences > Sound > Input. There is the possibility that the internal microphone of your Mac may be selected, and being used which may be causing this issue.

You can also find some great troubleshooting steps that may help with this issue in the following article.

If sound quality is reduced when using Bluetooth headphones with your Mac

Let us know the results, and we'll go from there.

Thank you for those additional details Emilie,

Knowing that the issue occurs in all apps greatly helps isolate the issue. Did you have the opportunity to complete the steps that were previously linked? If not, try the steps outlined there and let us know the result.

If you continue to have issues after completing those steps boot the Mac in to safe mode to see if the issue continues, you'll also want to test in an alternate user account. If you don't have an alternate user account you can find the steps for creating a user, along with booting in to safe mode linked below.

How to use safe mode on your Mac

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Have a great day!
