The send request is not working. It says it send but the other party never gets the request. You only can see their name in find my friends and the map is a black screen. Location settings is on, rebooted phone, I can see my devices just not friends. 12pro Max iOS 14.4.2
Ok, I figured it out. You have to add your friends iCloud email address under their contact information. You can’t add it to find my friends with only a phone number.

Adding iCloud account emails fixed it for me. Where was that little bit of info in apple instructions? Seems like an important change you may want to call out somewhere obvious.

We all upgraded to new iPhone 12 Pro Max phones in March with the latest iOS 14.4.2 also I have an iPhone XS iOS 14.4.2 they all have the same issue. You can add a friend in Find My app you can see their name but the map is black. Also when you send the the request to follow location they never receive the request to allow. I know it worked fine before when we had it on a iPhone 8 to my XS. Restated multiple times, we know the location settings are on because we can see our other Apple devices on the map. But once you click on friends the map goes black. It has to be a system problem.
All of what you requested were check already.
I have tried it on my company iPhone XS and my personal iPhone 12 Pro and it doesn’t work. I previously had it working on my company XS and my wife’s iPhone 8 and it worked fine. After I upgraded my wife’s and I phones to 12 pro that feature does not work. Also check it on my son and daughters iPhone 12 Pro and the friends feature does not work on any for the 4 iPhone 12 pros or the XS. It has to be something with the latest iOS version.
