How to connect an unpaired Apple Watch to internet

So I have been given a Apple Watch series 1 from a friend and I’m struggling to pair it with my iPhone, when I try to pair it says the watch needs an update and when I try to update the watch it says it needs to be connected to internet, yet to connect the watch to internet it needs to be paired. I have made sure that my phone is connected to internet when I try this, but I seem to be going round in circles and I am unable to update the watch as it requires the watch to be connected to internet.
