Macbook Pro 16" Scrambled Screen

I have a Macbook Pro 16" from late 2019. During the last year, I've had some intermittent issues with my screen.

After a while, the problem got worse and the computer became unusable. Apple was great and replaced the logic board.

I've been using the computer again for about one month and the problem has started again. The same thing: parts of the screen appear scrambled.

I have been using the computer driving an external 4K TV monitor, connecting it through an interface. But the problem also works if I connect directly a thunderbolt-hdmi cable. And in the past it has also happened without any external monitor.

Two screenshots below. The first one, from WhatsApp App. The problem is on the left part:

The second screen, from Google Chrome, with Google Sheets opened:

I don't believe this problem is app-related. I've had it with several different apps. I also don't believe it to be related to CPU pressure, but I am not sure about that. It might be related to memory usage or heat. I am already using a notebook fan.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Hi Guga 72,

We understand the screen on your Mac is distorted/pixelated and you can't see anything correctly. We're happy to help.

To start, you can try a system "SMC" reset to see if that corrects the issue: How to reset the SMC of your Mac

This reset may also help with display issues: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

You can also try starting the computer in safe mode to see if that corrects the display issue, or if it looks the same: Start up your Mac in safe mode

If you continue to have issues with the screen image, we'd recommend contacting Apple Support for assistance: Get Support

We hope this helps. Take care!

Hi Leanne,

Thanks for answering. My hardware has already been repaired and the problem came back. I've found out that this is a common problem affecting MacBook Pro 16-inch 2019. Several people complain of the same thing. It seems Apple is working to somehow repair it, possibly via a GPU driver update.

Several people report that reseting the SMC or NVRAM or PRAM does not help. This is my case. The problem comes back.

Here is another thread I've found out about this.

It seems that Apple is working on the issue, but I am not sure.

My best,

Eduardo
