Apple Trade in Changed my Trade in Value

I am currently a senior in college who has had a 2013 MacBook Air since my freshman year. I decided it was time for an upgrade and purchased a new MacBook Pro with a trade in of my old laptop. They valued my trade in at $250 and I followed all their steps when I packaged it. I got a message today that my trade in value changed to $0 and that the screen had dead spots, lines, and distortions, and that the computer would not power on. The laptop was PERFECTLY FINE when I sent it in and I only upgraded because I wanted to. Should I contact Apple about this? I’m afraid that if I reject the offer and have them send it back that I will receive the laptop with these issues and won’t be able to resell it myself. What are my options here?

MacBook Air 13″, 10.15

You certainly can discuss this with Apple directly. As you know Apple uses a third-party to evaluate trade-ins. Although, I have never had anything but good luck using them, a number of folks have reported similar experiences as yours with their trade-ins.

At this point, you still have a number of options, but I can't attest that any of them will get this resolved for you without some effort on your part ... and they are:

  1. As you suggested, contact Apple directly and "plead your case." Again, there a number of other posts here with this same issue.
  2. Since the third-party will not offer any type of trade-in value, ask them to return your notebook. Then take it to your local Apple Store to have them process the trade-in.
  3. If you find yourself unable to get a resolution, keep this notebook as a "spare," sell it outright, or give it to a friend or relative in need of a notebook ... or donate it to whatever cause you feel can use it.
