Unlocking iPhone for new SIM card

I am a college student who is studying abroad in the UK this summer. I have heard that I can "unlock" my iPhone to put a UK SIM card in it so that I can use it while I am abroad. What does the unlocking process look like and how long would this take? Also, would I buy a new SIM card when I get to the UK or before?

To unlock your iPhone you have to contact the cell service provider it is currently locked to. What it looks like, if they will do it, how long it takes depends upon who your provider is. And you would get your new SIM when you get to the UK.
