How do I download apps purchased on my apple iphone to my mac computer?

iOS and macOS devices are pretty different in terms of hardware and the operating system, so apps can’t sync between them.
Is this something new? The Apple Apps store on my Mac has the same Apple App store logo on my iPhone. I could have sworn that I used to see my App purchases on my Mac laptop as well as my iphone no matter which device I made the purchase on. So what does this mean? I have to buy the same App (i.e. JustYoga) twice (phone and again on mac paying twice for the same app) to have one the phone and my laptop?
