Deleting gmail account on iPad

I want to delete my gmail account as I’ve opened an iCloud account. When I go to delete my gmail account it says all my contacts will be deleted. How can I delete the account without losing my contacts?

iPad, iPadOS 14

Before closing your Google Mail (Gmail) account, pause to consider if this is sensible...

When you created your AppleID, you will very likely have used an email address to identify your AppleID account (your AppleID Username being your primary email address). If your Gmail address corresponds with your AppleID, you need to update your AppleID account prior to closing your Gmail account - as, should you fail to do so, you may permanently lock yourself out of your AppleID account and devices.

You can, should you elect to do so, change your AppleID Username to your Apple email address, but this may not necessarily be the best option. Consider also that you would be best advised to have at least two email accounts, one being used as a secondary (recovery) email address for your AppleID account.

More information about updating your AppleID, should it be necessary, can be found here:

Having considered the above, should you still wish to close your Gmail account, you will close the account from the Gmail account itself. You will need to sign-in to Google from your web browser - and close your account from there:
