Can iMessages that turn green (sent as text message) mean that the recipient's phone is turned off/dead?

I sent an iMessage to my friend and my texts are normally blue with them. Now they are appearing green and saying (sent as a text message). When trying to call, it doesn't ring and goes straight to voicemail. Can iMessages that turn green (sent as text message) mean that the recipient's phone is turned off/dead?

Sounds like they are in a very poor signal strength area with no cellular data or WiFi connection. SMS messages will go through with only the barest minimum of cellular voice signal.

But, it could also mean that the recipient has logged out of iMessage.

Since you can text them, why don't you just ask?

Can iMessages that turn green (sent as text message) mean that the recipient's phone is turned off/dead?
