It can be caused by water

Take out the SIM tray and look for a red indicator. That will void any warranty claim. It could still have seeped into the joint between Screen and body.

Water resistance can reduce with age and is not guaranteed,

If you took out AppleCare+ it is covered for $99 /£79

I answered a nurse who wiped her phone with a 70% alcohol wipe after a long covid ward shift. It seeped into the screen and did exactly the same. It does not take a drop into the bath to do this if you are unlucky enough to have the water resistance weakened. the 30% water content did the damage. It would not have showed up on the water indicator but would have done on inspection of the camera.
