'java' process running after starting macbook pro

Every time I start or restart my laptop, the 'java' process starts automatically and uses about 800 MB of memory. That started a few days ago. I'm not what this is and if I should be concerned about it.

Hi _abcd,

You can use safe mode to isolate the issue. Follow the steps in How to use safe mode on your Mac. Safe mode will help you figure out whether a problem is caused by software that loads as soon as your Mac boots up. Then after you find out if it does or doesn't happen in safe mode you can follow either the section, "If the issue continues in safe mode" or "If the issue doesn't continue in safe mode."

Best!

Hi _abcd,

It sounds like you're wondering what Java is and how possibly disable it. We're glad you've joined us in Apple Support Communities. Let's see if this helps.

Java is a programing language used to supplement or create applications and used in some web pages. Check out the information in What is Java technology and why do I need it? It will explain what it is and why it's used.

If you still determine that you don't want to use it, you can follow the steps in How to disable the Java web plug-in in Safari. Keep in mind that some applications and web pages won't load once you disable this.

If the issue remains, let us know if you see Java in Apple > System Preferences.

We hope that helps with your question and take care!

Hi Sharon,

Thanks for the introduction to Java, but that's not the problem.

As I said, a process started by the kernel and called 'java' is executed every time the laptop is started. This was not the case in the past (2019 - a few days ago).

We have seen that the subject is treated quite ambiguously in the forums, and that other people have had the same problem in the past. But not recently.

Since I use macOS Big Sur v 11.2.3 I thought it shouldn't be a problem.

However, it is curious that this process has started recently, it uses quite a lot of CPU power and RAM, and that when I stop it none of the functionality of all the other programs is affected.

That's why I ask about this process (not OOP programming language).
