System Prefs not sticking

Recently upgraded to Big Sur. Some of my system preferences are not being saved. I thought it was user error but now that I've restarted a few times…

General prefs, when changing the highlight color, it doesn't actually change it, and then when you go back the highlight color is back to the standard blue.

Mouse prefs always revert back to whatever are the standard prefs. I can change the prefs and it will honor *most* of them (not all), but it changes back after a restart.

SOME sounds are messed up. Emptying the trash and moving files I get both the Catalina sound and the Big Sur sound together. The rest seem like they are the standard Big Sur sounds.

None of the following made a difference:

  • Reset NVRAM.
  • Reset PRAM.
  • Started up in Safe Mode.

So. Thoughts or suggestions? Please chime in. Thanks!

"Belongs to my employer."

The biggest clue of all. Many employers employ Mobile Device Management programs, and have hidden admin users that prevent unwanted change to system preferences. Discuss with your employer what access rights you have.

Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Users and Groups will indicate what level of permission you have.

Administrator & Standard users who aren't able to change their preferences, probably have a hidden admin.

Mobile users are typically controlled by the organization much like ones with "parental controls"

Apple menu -> System Preferences also often has a "profiles" section. If it does, then the organization is using a utility like JAMF to configure everything. A self service application offers you some access through the Applications folder.

The rest has to be contacted through the organization.

If you are able to unlock the padlock in the bottom left corner of system preferences, then you will be able to modify them.

Otherwise they are controlled by the organization.

I understand that, but my experience with JAMF has been that once it is enrolled in Apple's DEP, system preference restrictions

are specific to the JAMF distribution. In our company we have an automatic logout when in sleep after a certain period of time.

A real pain for people doing downloads, and we have to give them admin access to override it.

So there it is, if you are backing up your data, and know what you are doing, the internal IT team can grant you access to make those changes. Without that, we'd be overstepping our bounds.

SO. I fixed it. Somehow, magically, I was allowed to apply read and write capabilities to my user library folder and all its contents and now all is working as expected. I did not have to ask the help desk to remotely unlock or allow me access or anything. Miracle of miracles, LOL.

I believe this also fixed my Outlook not indexing, as well as apps not recognizing the second video cam on an external monitor.

So, A Brody--info to file away, and hopefully will help someone.

Did JAMF apply the update from its own server? Or was it applied directly by downloading from Apple with no JAMF intervention? I have found if JAMF is installed, it is better to let it do the updates.

I also have found that once JAMF is installed, it is hard to remove the profiles with the simple sudo command to remove the frameworks. Other steps need to be taken with JAMF.

If Filevault is enabled turning it off can frequently help completely removing JAMF.

To really make it a personal machine, all remnants of JAMF have to be gone. Otherwises there will always be a level of control of the system.

Yep, that's my next step. I can get their lockdown turned off only for an hour, so I need to have my ducks in a row before I call them.

I'm thinking it might be some kind of permissions issue. Maybe it can't save my preferences because my account doesn't have the right permissions. So my first step is going to be to apply read and write permissions to the library folder(s), see if that nets me anything. Probably a hand slap, lol.

I will update this post if I come across anything that works. I can't imagine that no one else is having this issue, so maybe I can help someone.

(That auto log-off would drive me nuts. Once logged into the VPN, uploading takes twice as long. And as a designer, my files are always big. It's almost worth the 35-minute drive to the office to log on from my desk.)

Yes, well, I have a lot of access to the machine, including being able to move files in and out of the libraries. Fortunately they trust me to not mess with the corporate stuff. I think I'm their power-user guinea-pig. Which doesn't mean I won't have a conversation.

That said, I like to do what I can before I go back to them. Often they want to wipe the machine and start over, which is a total PITA and messes with me making my deadlines. I don't have an entire day to wait for them to wipe, and me to re-set up software, fonts, bookmarks, etc. So when I can offer other ideas it's helpful to all parties.

Does anyone have any additional actions that I might take, or areas where I should look for file duplications or permissions, etc? Is it possible that there were files that weren't overwritten when the update installed? I'm trying to determine if it's a bug or something local.

Thanks.

Yes, we do use JAMF. I am familiar with how it all works. There is no hidden admin account, it's right out in the open on the login page. Like I said, I do have freedom to make many changes. I can unlock all the padlocks in preferences. I have admin access in Users & Groups.

My question still stands: are there any additional actions that I might take, or areas where I should look for file duplications or permissions, etc? Is it possible that there were files that weren't overwritten when the update installed?

Pretend it's a personal machine in the wild. How would you answer the question if there were no corporate restrictions?

Thank you.

Just pretend it's a personal machine with no corporate intervention. How would you answer the following?

Are there any additional actions that I might take, or areas where I should look for file duplications or permissions, etc? Is it possible that there were files that weren't overwritten when the update installed?

Yes, the update was applied from the self service catalog. (We are not allowed access to the App store.) I am not going to remove anything from the computer, or disable Filevault, or remove JAMF profiles. I have no intention of turning it into a personal machine. That is not what I'm asking. I am looking for some constructive action that I can take to solve the problem of my preferences not sticking.

Of course I can call my internal IT folks. I'm here because I'm looking for some outside the box thinking. The help desk's pat solution is to wipe the machine and I don't want to do that because it takes too much time. Deadlines loom-- I have work to do. Therefore, if there's something else that I can try before "starting over" I would greatly appreciate someone share any ideas.

Thanks.
