Time Machine from encrypted Mac to external drive doesn't allow restore

my macbook is encrypted, external drive is not. Time Machine saves seem to fail. Older saves, from time before Mac was encrypted, do work (permit restore). Must I encrypt external drive, to use with encrypted Mac?

When I did it for the first time it sent me this message “time machine is backing up an encrypted disk to an unencrypted disk”. Is this a problem? What does that mean? Do I need to change something? How to un-encrypt my Time Machine back up disk I have an external USB hard drive that I back up to using Time Machine. I've been using the disk for years. I've just noticed in the Time Machine preferences that it says the disk is 'encrypted'. I presume this means that I must have set up a password for the disk so that if someone plugs the disk into a different computer they can not access my files without the password? Trouble is I can't remember what the password is. How do I un-encrypt my disk / TM backups? Do I have to use Disk Utilities to wipe the disk clean and then resume TM? That could take hours...

Time Machine - Back up not encrypted: Time Machine is backing up an encrypted disk to an unencrypted disk. Backing up my MacBook Pro 16 for first time and get the following message, "Back up not encrypted: Time Machine is backing up an encrypted disk to an unencrypted disk." File vault in system preferences says encryption is "off" for my hard drive. Why is this saying this, and what does it mean and how do I fix it?
