I am trying to erase my MacBook Pro. In Disk Utility the erase button is not active. What do I do to erase it?

You can't cut off the branch you are standing on. MacOS, when loaded from the boot drive, can not erase the boot drive.

Use Internet Recovery, which leaves the drive completely free, but requires an Internet connection:

Command-Option-R
