Automatic Backup Help

To utilize automatic backups, do you need to keep your external hard drive connected to your laptop continuously?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.14

Thank you! That makes sense! I was wondering how that worked. I have a MacBook Air and won't always have it connected to a hard drive, so I think instead I will just plan to do a weekly backup. Thank you again!

Yes, since Time Machine backs up every hour. If you do not, it will create snapshots on your computer which can take up considerable space until you plug in the external drive again.
