apple pencil not connecting/ charging

i have an ipad air 3 and an apple pencil 1. i went to use the pencil after two days of it sitting unused and now it wont pair with the ipad. when i try charge the pencil it makes a buzzing sound for about 10secs and then it goes silent. i did manage to pair it once and told me the pencil was on 0% but then when i went to connect again on the bluetooth menu it told me to plug in the pencil when it was already plugged in.

it was working fine up until this and i have not damaged the pencil
