voicemail playback

On my iPhone 7 voicemails are recorded but cannot be listened to. That is the mail is there but when I select the voicemail button the message says no voicemail. It can only be listened to by dialing my own number. Why and how can I fix that?

There's two things here.

Get in touch with your carrier first about this.
Your carrier might not support Visual Voicemail. If you want to check if your carrier does support it, go to this article for assistance: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204039

Since Voicemail is a specific carrier's feature, contact them and explain your problem.
