I have a mini 2 and just picked up a 5. With the 2, when I close the case it's in the screen goes to its base state, with background picture and time, then to black a few seconds after. I don't have a case yet for the 5. Is that relevant or is there a setting that does it (it does go black if I insert it in the 2's case (even though not perfect fit)? It doesn't seem to be Auto Lock, since I have the 2 on Never.

Thanks for clarifying that for us. What you're experiencing is expected if you have the Lock/Unlock enabled under Settings > Display & Brightness, as this locks the iPad when the case is closed. You can switch that off if desired. We hope this helps you.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're happy to help with your iPad 5 screen going dark. This sounds like you may have inadvertently enabled the auto-lock feature on your device. You can check this by going to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, and checking the length of time set for this. Let us know what you find, and we can go from there if needed.
