How do I use iMac as second display for MacBook Air

I use my 2011 27-inch iMac as the display for my MacBook Air 2018 by connecting iMac mini-display port to MacBook Thunderbolt port, and typing Command-Fn2 on the iMac. Now I want to use my Apple Bluetooth keyboard with the MacBook Air. How do I get MacBook Air to connect to the iMac's bluetooth keyboard?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.2

Hi Barbaree,

Un-pair, Restart, and Re-pair the accessory.

You must disconnect it from the first Mac. You can then connect it to the other Mac. An Apple accessory cannot be used for two different Macs at the same time.

  1. Disconnect: Go to System Preferences --> Bluetooth --> Select the accessory, and hit "x".
  2. Restart the accessory.
  3. Pair: Go to System Preferences --> Bluetooth --> look for the "new" device to be paired, and follow the steps.

Are you having issues with Target Display Mode? Your Title and Description seem to be for different issues.

Cheers,

Jack

Thanks so much, yes. Bluetooth connects only two devices at a time, that’s the answer!

Learning difference between “Target” mode and second “Display” helps, too. In both, when connected to MacBook , the iMac is still operating. Thanks.

I bought a MacAlly wired keyboard, but the Command-Fn2 keystroke is not actually Apple-compatible. I’ll need two Mac-compatible keyboards.

thank you thank you
