Got the “Prohibitory Symbol”

Went through the steps based on suggestions:

Command R @ Startup

1) Would not let me “Reinstall OS X” (OS X El Capitan) because there were no disk options on the ‘Select Disk To Install’ page.

2) Went back to Disk Utility and saw that “Internal Apple HDD” did not have a partition. Per a suggestion I created a partition and now I cannot go back and ‘mount’ it or ‘rename’ it. I’ve tried going in from the menu at the top and the drop down at the top of the page. I cannot completely delete it to start over. I don’t want to do anything else until I get guidance.

Thanks...

Mac mini, macOS 11.1

If the Mac Mini is solid state, any upgrading past High Sierra will make it APFS. El Capitan does not understand it, and you'll need to reformat it HFS Extended Journaled, which will wipe the hard drive.

Backup your data first, and put in target disk mode 'T' key booting, and connect to a High Sierra system via Firewire, or Thunderbolt to transfer over any files you haven't already before reformatting.
