How to fix "The last backup could not be completed"?

My iPhone has stopped backing up to iCloud. I've signed out, and back in to iCloud; restarted the iPhone; confirmed ample storage on iCloud, and on the iPhone, available storage is slightly greater than "Next Backup Size". Other iCloud services work as expected, and backup to Mac works. This problem appeared one week ago. Previously, iCloud backups worked seamlessly. Can anyone help?

Thank you for the suggestion, I much appreciate your time. I did try the forced restart but to no avail. In the end a fix worked out by Apple Support was successfull, if a bit more challenging than expected. The solution involved first making an encrypted local backup of the iPhone via Finder (under MacOS 11), then loading the phone with a fresh copy of iOS from Apple's server and finally, restoring the iPhone settings and data states using the local Finder backup. Following this procedure, the phone regained the ability to create an iCloud Backup, both automatically (powered, locked, wi-fi) and manually via Back Up Now.

Thanks to you for your suggestions, and thanks to Apple Support as well, for working it out for me.

The next backup size shouldn’t really have any effect on the available space on the phone with regard to an iCloud backup. It may mean that you are running out of space on the phone though. However, that’s a different story.

I get that message about the backup not being able to complete from time to time and this is what I do. Go to Settings>Your Name>iCloud>Apps using iCloud>iCloud Backup>Off. Then force close the settings app completely. Restart your phone, then go back to the settings and turn the iCloud backup on again. Then try a manual backup.

I think the next thing I would try is to repeat the steps but rather than a conventional restart, try a forced restart. Hole down on the slope and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo on the screen, then let go of the buttons.

If that still fails, you could try rebooting your router, or try another WiFi network.
