can i store music remotely and not in Music app?

I want to be able to import into Music [the app] but as far as I can tell, unlike Photos [the app] Music doesn't offer the option of storing my music remotely i.e not in the actual app itself, which occupies space on my HDD.

Is that the case or is there a workaround?

I took your remotely to mean in the cloud rather than external or network storage. See Make a split library portable - Apple Community for advice on moving your library off your primary hard drive. The process is essentially the same for Music, drag the entire library to another drive, then option-start-Music to access it there. If your Music library still has connections to a previous iTunes Media folder you will want to reset the media folder and consolidate to the new location.
