2011 iMac neither iTunes nor YouTube playing

Got my dads old iMac and reinstalled ElCap on it and tried to get iTunes playing for my kids. Will load my Apple Music account/playlists but won't play them. Just sits there at 0:00. So I go to Youtube and try to play a video. Loads in, won't start playing. Get the "this is taking long to play, restart your computer" message from YouTube. What is happening???? All the videos and media seem to load, but it won't budge. Frustration. It's such a nice iMac I'd hate to have to toss it.

First thing that I would do, is upgrade the Mid 2011 iMac from 10.11 El Capitan to 10.13 High Sierra. Which will give it a more secure macOS, plus newer versions of both iTunes and Safari.

Using "Safari" go to > https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683 scroll down to "Download macOS" and click on "macOS High Sierra 10.13" in blue.

It's tough to troubleshoot when users take on older equipment and do what you did. If it had been mine, I would have followed the steps in the link I provided above. Then restarted in the Recovery Partition (Command + R on startup) and installed the version of Mac OS on the HD. Then I would have used How to get old versions of macOS to install 101.3.6 on the computer.

I'd say at this point to do that and hope for the best.
