I am applying a simple flashback transition to 2 clips and the effect looks horrible! It is not smooth at all, it adds a wiggle / distort effect at very high speed, then slows then back to high speed.
Anyone else seeing this behavior?

I opened a copy of that transition in Motion, and it is really a mess.
As it happens, it is quite a simple transition, it basically just adds an "underwater" behavior, but it messes the parameters for this behavior.
In just a few minutes, I was able to do one version that seems to behave much better. I would share it, but since this is done just by discrete modifications of one of the built-in transitions, I am not sure.
Is this the built-in Flashback transition?
What your mac, drive and FCP and macOS version?
Does it help if your render that section?
I had not used this transition, but just did a test on my mac and see no problem with it.

I had done just a very short transition and seemed ok, but then I tried adjusting the duration to be longer and I can see what you are talking about.
I will look further into it.
Do you have Motion?
It is fairly easy to do this effect properly if you do.
I wonder how they botched it, as it is actually so simple.
Thanks, yes it is something I would think should work without issue, one of the oldest transitions out there and it is unusable in FCP!
