The current iPhones can be charged with any 5volt power adapter from any device, apple, Android and others, with at least 12 watts of power.

If you have a previous iPhone, iPad, or Mac (made in the last few years), you can use its charger and cable to charge the new iPhone. Also any 5 volt charger from an Android phone, tablet or other device with a USB port and sufficient power delivery can be used.

The fact is, providing a charger is rather redundant as most people will either already have one, or go out and buy a different one regardless.

The cord that comes with the new iphone 12 does not work with any other plugs!

It is a USB-C Lightning cord as listed, and you're correct, USB-C doesn't work (directly) with USB-A connections.

Existing USB-A Lightning cords and USB-A chargers can and do work, however.

Apple and other vendors have been migrating to USB-C for a while now.

Various iPad Pro models now include USB-C connectors, not Lightning.

I expect those USB-C connectors to spread to other Apple iPhone and iPad devices.

USB-C can provide substantially more power than can USB-A, for rapid charging and other uses.

USB-C can and does power an entire laptop, something USB-A was never capable of.

And a Mac USB-C charger can charge iPhone 8 and later.

Did you purchase this new iPhone directly from the online Apple Store? If so, then you should already know what comes with it as Apple clearly identifies "What's in the box" before you place an order. You don't mentioned which model you purchased, but if it happened to be an iPhone 12, then this was the content graphic provided:
