How to link new Apple ID to Apple Watch

So I bought a Apple Watch off family member and when I go to pair it to my iPhone and Apple ID it says I can’t use my Apple ID to pair the Apple Watch cause of some activation lock. They disconnected it from their phone but it’s not letting me pair it, it’s still saying that it’s locked to their Apple ID. Do they have to be next to me for the watch to be able to sense that the phone forgot it?

Not necessarily. Here are two ways they can "remotely" unpair the watch:

  • See the 'How to erase your Apple Watch if you don't have your iPhone' section of:

Unpair and erase your Apple Watch - Apple Support

  • With a web browser, go to: https://www.iCloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID. Open Find My iPhone and select All Devices (at the top). Then click your Apple Watch, select 'Erase Apple Watch', and select Next until the device is erased. Finally click "X" next to remove your Apple Watch.
