Can Apple fix Big Sur notifications?

The new notification implementation in Big Sur is infuriating. Individual notifications are too difficult to dismiss. They require a fine-motor dance to reach the tiny 'X' button to remove them from view. Swiping does not permanently remove the notification. There are no optional keybindings for notification dismissal provided.

In Catalina and earlier, you could simply click to dismiss the notification. Please restore this functionality -- at least as a configurable option. The current design forces the user to interact with the notification more than is warranted.

What options are available to restore or improve notification functionality?
