USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter Cable length

Hello

USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter

Cable length question - long enough to reach the desk?

If I put a 12.9" iPad Pro (2021 version - Gen 5) on a Magic Keyboard then the  USB-C port will be half-way up on the right hand side - I think, from looking at the photos on the web-site.

If I plug the above AV adapter into the ipad will the cable be long enough to allow the hub to lay flat on the desk or will it be dangling from the side of the iPad thus putting strain on the iPad's USB-C port?

Or do I need a small extension cable?

Thanks

Good question.

I do not use that adapter so I am not sure, but from the photographs I can see, I think your perplexity is correct: probably the cable is too short to rest well next to the external keyboard.

I'd suggest creating a small cradle next to the iPad when using the adapter to cushion the weight, so the port (and adapter) itself doesn't get damaged over time. If possible, I would not use additional extension cables.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes I understand this is not Apple.

I appreciate and understand that user can have an excellent insight into how a product works in real-life use.

I'm now thinking if I get a monitor with usb-c input then maybe all I will need is a single usb-c cable between the ipad and the monitor itself. So less strain on the ipad port.

I think, not 100% sure, that some monitors may have a usb 2.0 or 3.0 to plug a pen-stick into which will be accessible from the ipad through the usb-c cable

I also think!! That the ipad may charge up from the monitor. I may be wrong but it would make sense, to me anyway :-)

I have never had an Apple device before but the new ipad pro has tempted me to the dark side :-) can't wait to order it.

I have a bit to learn about the Apple way of things.

People at work keep telling me that after using it for a while I will probably throw my windows laptop in the bin :-)

And with the m1 chip it may well be much faster than mt i7 processor. It looks amazingly fast. Can't wait for it to arrive.

Thanks again

The iPad Pro supports DisplayPort over USB-C. If your monitor has a suitable connection, then yes, you may be able to make a direction connection via USB-C to your monitor. Note, however, that the monitor must itself support DisplayPort over USB-C.

Many monitors have a built-in USB hub, however, this may not provide a video connection. Check the monitor specifications.

Your iPad requires more power to charge than many computers/monitors can provide. The USB connection must be able to provide at least 12W to reliably charge your iPad. Many computer/monitor USB ports are limited to 2.5-5W.

For many users, the iPad will be flat on a table or desktop - and as such the short cable of the USB-C Digital AV Adapter would not be an issue. However, when the iPad is mounted on a Magic Keyboard or easel, then the adapter will “hang” from the side of the iPad.

USB-C cables are not designed to be used with a cable extender. As the cable from the AV Adapter is integral to the adapter, using an uncertified extension cable may interfere with, or inhibit, correct operation of the adapter.

Given your intended use, you might be best advised to use a USB-C hub - and connect this to your iPad with a cable of adequate length. You may then be able to connect your AV Adapter to the hub instead of direct connection to the iPad. Be aware that some third-party USB-C hubs already incorporate connections for DHMI and/or other video connections.

You are welcome, Hattie_Dog.

As you might know, you're not addressing Apple here and we, just users like you, are not aware of Apple decisions/plans.

But we (you) have a good opportunity to sumbit our/your requests/comments to Apple directly, using this link:--> Apple – Product Feedback

The more we write, the more chances are that our requests will be accepted in the future.

Take care.
