There is a process for doing this. Use the Migration Assistant app for the transfer. The steps are:

  • Begin the process of setting up the new Mac, following the instructions.
  • Connect the two computers using a USB cable. Do not use Wi-Fi. it is too slow for the amount of data that will be transferred and corruption of the data is possible.
  • When asked to do so, activate Migration Assistant and follow the instructions carefully (They are not complex.)
  • You will be presented with some options of what to transfer. I would transfer all of my files and the preferences and settings as well. You may elect to transfer your apps or download and reinstall them in the computer. Note: some may have to be reregistered to activate them in the new computer.
  • The old operating system will not be transferred to the new computer.
  • The total transfer time can take an hour or so. Maybe more, maybe less. Just let it do its thing.
  • Enjoy your new Mac.
