DesktopServicesHelper -- What is it?

I have a pretty new MacBook Pro (2021). When I first got it, it ran like lightning. All of a sudden it seems to be pretty bogged down. Activity monitor shows that DesktopServicesHelper process is using up around 40%-50% of CPU resources.

What the heck is DesktopServicesHelper?

Do I need to keep it running?

Many thanks.

While looking back through a user's older EtreCheck report, posted online

I see reference to DesktopServicesHelper in the report's context; in a Mac's

System library (path/sentence below, from 'Go To Folder' via Go, in Finder)

In your case, you may be able to force-quit the process. Or go hunting with

Console utility and/or terminal to ferret it out? (Perhaps bad idea, at that!)

A modern EtreCheck utility may help remove this item.

Hadn't checked a more recent system, for this item in Library logs (where ~Library is usually shown as path.)

[Not sure if this gives any decisive clues!]
