Trouble with changing shortcuts in safari.

I just made the switch to safari from chrome on my MacBook and I was trying to change some of the shortcuts to what I was used to. A forum on here I found told me to go to System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> App Shortcuts in order to add commands specifically for safari. I was able to do so for many of them such as change view history from ⌘H to ⌘Y. Another thing I wanted to change was to make opening a new window from ⌘⌥N to ⌘N. I was able to do so and it is updated within the top dock menu.

This works as intended when I am not on full screen. However, when I try to open a new window in full screen, it just opens a new tab. Not sure what the solution to this would be but I would be grateful if any of you guys could help. Thanks.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.2

Greetings, and welcome to Apple Support Communities aryamanB0506,

From your post we can see you’ve been updating your keyboard shortcuts

and found you're unable to get a new window in Safari while in full screen.

You're right, if you're in full screen it would seem there would only be a way to open a tab rather than a new window. If you'd like to leave feedback regarding this, you can use this link: Feedback - Safari - Apple

Something to consider would be included in this guide: Use apps in full screen on Mac After checking this out, go to the paragraph that starts with "To work in a bigger window without going full screen". It shows you how to zoom the window without using the entire screen. By doing this, you'd be able to use ⌘N, and get your new window rather than a tab.

This might fit your workflow too: Work in multiple spaces on Mac This will allow you to create up to 16 spaces to utilize your Mac as you'd like.

We hope this helps!

I have been using chrome for most of my life and switching to Safari was different so I was just changing some of the shortcuts. The new window can be set to anything but ⌘N which is what I am used to. I have tried contacting apple support but they couldn't figure it out either. I am able to change other commands as well as this one and it all works. This command will also work with a different shortcut just not ⌘N.
