my phone has forgotten the imap password and so have I. what do I do?

Assuming is is not iCloud mail...
Firstly, go to Settings, Passwords. Is it there?
If not, Log into your email account in a computer browser and follow the usual Forgot my password link.
Shen tjey give you the new password, delete the account on the phone and add it back with the right one.
