If you mean the tiny symbol on the folder icon shown here, I just assume it is used to indicate sharing (with people).

Hi - where are you seeing this? In the photos app?
I can't see anything labled "shared photos" in big sur. I do see shared albums. - what version of MacOS do you have.

Yes via the app on the Mac and when all the folders are opened exposing the folder listing
