What do I do when there is no "software update" icon in System Preferences?

I cannot find an "update software" icon under system preferences when I click on the Apple icon in upper left corner. Where can I find it so I can update and enable automatic updates?

System Preferences > Software Update didn't exist until Mojave 10.14.
