Books App doesn’t save edits made on documents

My Books app is (seemingly) randomly not saving certain edits I have made (using the rule and pen tools). I use these to mark my progress in patterns I am following so I can pick up easily. iCloud Drive syncing is turned on. Is there something I can do to stop losing my notations?
