I’ve been having this problem since about October last year. The themes in Messenger aren’t working properly - usually the background is not showing.
My phone is iPhone 7 Plus with the latest update. I tried reinstalling the app, restarting the phone, nothing seems to ever work.
Anybody have any ideas how to fix this? :( I’m getting frustrated.

You did not reference Facebook. Posters here often use the term Messenger to refer to Messages on an iPhone.
As that is an app developed by Facebook, you'll need to ask them about Messenger themes not working.
Well the app’s name is Messenger, not Messages, so I didn’t make a mistake 🤷🏻

It is not possible to delete and reinstall the Messages app on iOS. It is also not possible to install themes.
Are you sure this is the iOS Messages app you are using?
Yes, that was the FB Messenger you mentioned flew over my head.
As LACAllen writes, it is Facebook you must contact.
