sync calendar/contacts with iCloud versus iTunes

I use iTunes on a Windows 10 PC to sync my Outlook 365 Calendar and Contacts with my iPhone 8 calendar and contacts. Today I received the following message in iTunes: "Support for syncing contacts and calendars has been deprecated and will be removed in a future version of iTunes."

I think it is still syncing. My questions are as follows:

  1. Best option if I cannot use iTunes - Is it iCloud?
  2. If it is iCloud - will it duplicate all entries the first time I use iCloud to sync or does it recognize the two (iPhone calendar/contacts & PC based Outlook calendar/contacts) are already synced and just add/remove/change any differences? I have not used iCloud in past.

One last note: I sync both an iPhone and iPad Air with my Windows 10 PC.

I have also stayed away from cloud storage (I have a 7TB external Drive I use instead.) If our only option is to move to iCloud, I can easily find the steps to activate. The help I am looking for is someone to share the experience - someone who had used the iTunes sync functionality for Outlook calendar/contacts in the past and then converted to using iCloud. Gotchas, etc. I am especially worried since I sync my Windows 10 PC to an iPhone and iPad via iTunes (which works great now.)

I kind of understand Apple not wanting to use i"TUNES" to sync calendar/contacts - I just wish we could sync without having to move and store that type of private info out to their servers (a.k.a. iCloud).

Losing the built-in hardwire connection to sync an iPhone to a Windows computer would be a huge disappointment. The process works so reliably - in my experience - with Outlook Calendar and Contacts. If Apple discontinues this capability I hope someone can develop a work-around. I am not comfortable syncing my personal information via the cloud, regardless of the data security assurances that Apple (or any other provider) may provide. There's too much history of data breaches, whether intentionally mined or accidentally released through carelessness. Apple - please listen to this segment of your users: preserve the ability to sync to/from your devices through a wired non-cloud means. Please!

You can sync directly from an Android phone to your PC using a third-party app. Problem is, you have to run your Android phone in developer mode for that to work. I don't know if that situation has changed since I used a Samsung phone, but I will be looking into it when it comes times to buy a new phone.

Having the sync capability for personal info as a part of iTunes makes perfect since it is also used to sync the photos and music. Why not for the calendar and contacts too?
