IPhone 12 bluetooth connection with BMW e90 (2011 328i)

My iPhone 12 Pro consistently drops it's bluetooth connection with my e90. All previous versions of the iphone (5, 5s, 6, 6s, 7, 8 & XR) that I have had have had no issues. Now, making calls is hit or miss. Sometimes despite being shown as connected to my car, it will not connect through the car audio's system when receiving calls. Voice directions through Apple Maps only partially play through the car's audio & "Hey siri" disconnects the bluetooth from the car EVERY time. What changed with the iPhone 12? When comparing the specs between my XR and the 12, both use bluetooth 5.0, so I'm at a loss why this is happening. Reading through other forums and few posts in the Apple Community, this is an issue that has yet to be resolved.

Hello, needananswer14.

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities. We understand that you’ve been experiencing some Bluetooth connectivity issues between your iPhone 12 Pro and your vehicle, and we’d like to see if we can help you stay connected. You mentioned that it will intermittently route calls through your iPhone, but using Siri will drop the connection consistently.

Have you had a chance to try any troubleshooting? If not, let’s try these steps, testing in between each one to see which ones are the most helpful:

  • Update your iPhone
  • Toggle Bluetooth off in Settings (not Control Center), restart your iPhone, and toggle Bluetooth on again.
  • Delete the pairing record for all devices (including your iPhone 12 Pro) from your vehicle system, then forget your BMW from your Bluetooth devices on your iPhone. If you tend to use the same iPhone name with each device, try renaming your iPhone 12 Pro before reconnecting.

The "Connect using Bluetooth" section of this article explains most of the steps above:

How to connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your car - Apple Support

This page may come in handy when you get to the step where you check for software or firmware updates for your vehicle: BMW Software Update

Finally, this article will show you the Bluetooth profiles that your stereo system will need to support in order to provide optimal performance when connected via Bluetooth using iOS 14: Bluetooth profiles that iOS and iPadOS support - Apple Support

We look forward to learning whether you find these steps helpful.

Warmest Regards.

Thanks Alicia. There is either a software problem with the iphone 12 or a new manufacturer for the bluetooth hardware that is causing a difference in the bluetooth 5.0 protocol between it and the previous versions.

The very basic trouble shooting steps are what everyone else has also tried, but they have not solved the problem. Additionally, when monitoring the bluetooth connection, I noticed that in addition to dropping every time siri attempts to reply on Bluetooth, it drops everytime a voice command from directions is attempted as well.

In my case, there is no software update for BMW--those are only for vehicles equipped with navigation, nor do I think it would fix the problem on others as it appears to be the phone.

needananswer14,

You're very welcome. We understand your reluctance in performing the troubleshooting steps if you've noted that they're not successful for other users reporting similar issues. These steps have successfully resolved many Bluetooth issues, and we encourage you to attempt them. For example, toggling Bluetooth off and back on while restarting your iPhone will help refresh your connection; forgetting and reconnecting the devices from each other will create a new connection; and renaming your iPhone could resolve any miscommunication issues between the two.

Most vehicles equipped with Bluetooth capabilities have a computerized stereo system that can receive a firmware update. If your BMW isn't equipped with navigation, you may need to reach out to your dealer to ask them to manually check for available updates. We encourage you to reach out to your closest dealer to check for available Bluetooth firmware updates to your system.

After following the steps, if Siri is still dropping your Bluetooth, you might try reaching out to Apple Support directly for more advanced troubleshooting.
