Upgrading SSD on MacBook Pro 15" mid-2015

Hello Folks,

I am looking to replace my SSD to increase my MacBook Pro's storage capacity. So I am considering the purchase of the OWC Aura Pro X2 from https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ssd/owc/macbook-pro-retina-display/2013-2014-2015. In terms of hardware installation, it seems straightforward.

I want to know before recovering my data from TimeMachine, is a calibration needed for the new SSD? How can this be done?

Many Thanks

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.2

First make sure your laptop is running at least macOS 10.13 as this is required for any third party NVMe SSD such as the OWC Aura SSD.

When you install the OWC SSD you will need to boot into Recovery Mode (Command + R) or from a bootable macOS USB installer where you need to run Disk Utility to erase the whole physical SSD before installing macOS and migrating from the backup. Within Disk Utility click "View" and select "Show All Devices" so that the physical drive appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. You will need to erase the physical SSD as GUID partition and APFS (top option). After installing macOS Setup Assistant will provide you an option to restore from a backup when first booting into the new OS.
