Could you explain a little more about why your work is paused because of that display?

There are no updates for your Mac, as the App Store page (oddly formatted as it might be) states.

Are you possibly looking for an upgrade to Mojave, or to Catalina, or to Big Sur?

If so, see the following link > How to get old versions of macOS - Apple Support

Use (only) the Safari web browser to download a macOS upgrade kit.

Catalina and Big Sur do require all your apps be 64-bit, which means upgrading or replacing or retiring older 32-bit apps. You can use the Go64 tool to find those. As an example, Microsoft Office 2011 and earlier are 32-bit apps and will not work on Catalina and later, and you’ll need Office 2016, Office 2019, the upcoming Office 2021, or an Office 365 subscription, or an alternative such as the (free) LibreOffice package, or the Apple iWork apps which can read and write many Office documents.

Reinstall the macOS:

The Command Style Sheet of the macOS GUI looks all messed up. So, try reinstalling the macOS. Sometimes, when major changes are made to your Mac(i.e. update installations), system settings (i.e. for Mail) become manipulated, technically. So, when reinstalling, nothing would be deleted. It's just that items that have become corrupted or deleted, would be replaced or reinstalled back to where they should be. Go Here: How to Reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support

Important: First, Back Up your Mac:

Create a Time Machine backup of your Mac, so that you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall. Take this as a learning experience, knowing to always create a backup of your Mac, prior to making any major changes to it (i.e. update installation)

Read the text. That’s not an error, that’s the text of the App Store with some of the text and webpage formatting missing.

Apparently some App Store-related CSS file is not working quite right on macOS 10.13 and earlier, or missing.

[The App Store is a web app, so you’re looking at a web page there, and the webpage is missing some formatting. What’s there works fine, although it looks ugly. I’m certain Apple is aware, too.]

"TheLittles: there are some other recent reports of CSS problems on older versions when accessing the App Store.: And if the goal here is an upgrade (and not an update), then installing the newer version will replace most of the environment, making re-installing the old seemingly rather wasteful."

Why a Reinstall?:

Reinstall would have the intent of fixing the GUI. Would it work? It might, with the intention of getting everything to look and be operate as intended. But is it not its own app? If it is part of the Apple.com domain, then that would play a completely different role.
