Duplicate Bookmarks

Can someone help me out. I have a lot of duplicate bookmarks and would like to get rid of them is there a easy way or a app for free to get rid of duplicate bookmarks. I am looking at a lot of them so would like to keep only one of them each. There has to be a good way of doing this. Maybe I am calling them bookmarks but they are under favorites.

Thank you

Frank

Hi there!

To remove all your duplicate bookmarks at once, it is easier to do it in Chrome with an extension. First, if you are using Safari, export all your bookmarks. Open Safari, and click File on the top of the screen. Next, click Export Bookmarks. Save it to a folder you can remember. Afterwards, install Chrome, and search Bookmarks clean up. Install the extension. Then import your bookmarks to Chrome by clicking Bookmarks on the top of the screen and then Bookmark Manager. On the right side of the screen, click the three dots, and select Import bookmarks. Then click the puzzle piece on near the top of the browser, and select Bookmarks clean up. When that opens, click Find duplicated bookmarks. On the bottom of the screen, press Select in same folder. Then click Remove all selected. Go back to the Bookmark Manager, and click the three dots to export your bookmarks. Open Safari, and import those bookmarks by pressing File and then Import From and Bookmarks HTML File.

Hope this helps!

The extension for Chrome only works on the Chrome browser. You can find it at this link: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bookmarks-clean-up/oncbjlgldmiagjophlhobkogeladjijl?hl=en

For Firefox, there is another extension called Bookmark Dupes that specifically deletes duplicate bookmarks. Get it at this link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bookmark-dupes/

To use the extension, open the Firefox browser, and click the two overlapping stars on the right-hand side. Then press Dupes. Press Mark all but first in each group. To delete the duplicates, then press Remove marked bookmarks. The duplicates should be gone.

There is an app that can be installed on Safari to help manage duplicate bookmarks. It's called Save to Raindrop.io. However, I don't recommend it because it requires a subscription in order to use the duplicate manager, which costs $28 per year. Using Chrome would probably be the easiest way. The extension is called "Bookmarks clean up." After using Chrome, you can uninstall it by simply deleting the application in Finder.

Yes, you can sort bookmarks. Open Safari, and press "Bookmarks" on the very top of the screen (the bar with the Apple logo). Then click "Edit Bookmarks". Once that opens, double click or control-click the folder containing the bookmarks you want to arrange (it's usually the Favorites folder). Then press "Sort By". After that, click "Name". The bookmarks should then be sorted.

Sorry for the late reply! In the screenshots below, first press on the three dots (number 1.). Then press Preferences (number 2.). Click on Bookmark Dupes after that (number 3.). This should allow you to access the extension, from which you can clear your duplicate bookmarks using these steps:

  1. Press Dupes.
  2. Press Mark all but first in each group.
  3. Press Remove marked bookmarks.

The duplicates should then disappear.

Frank -- how many duplicate bookmarks do you have? Your original post was a week ago, have you simply tried deleting the duplicate bookmarks directly in Safari? Seems that would have worked, maybe a bit tediously, but still faster than this endless discussion here ... even if you have a hundred duplicates, one hundred clicks of the mouse, maybe a few minutes to remove them?

To get rid of all these folders, select one, press Command on the keyboard, and select the rest of the folders you want to delete. Then double click on one of the folders, and press Delete. If you are just trying to delete bookmarks, you don't need to export them. In Safari, press the Bookmarks tab on the very top of the screen. Then press Edit Bookmarks. In this page, you can both delete folders and bookmarks by simply double clicking and pressing Delete.

Xcode can be used to delete bookmarks and folders, but there is a much easier way. Open Safari, and press "Bookmarks" on the very top of the screen (where there's the Apple logo). Then press "Edit Bookmarks". After that, use two fingers on the trackpad or double click the bookmarks or folders you want to delete. When you do that, a menu pops up, and you press "Delete".

As for getting rid of duplicate bookmarks, I think the easiest way was to use an extension, such as through Firefox or Chrome. Xcode is possible, but I'm not sure how that would work. However, I'm not sure why the Firefox one did not work...

Yep, there's also a way to do it in Firefox. You want to open up the "Manage Bookmarks" page. After that, double click or control-click the folder containing the bookmarks you want to arrange. Then press "Sort By Name".

There is an article by Mozilla that lists the instructions with more detail: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/sort-bookmarks-quickly-find-ones-you-want

You're correct that by deleting the imported folders, the bookmarks in the Favorites folder would also be deleted. However, first copy all your bookmarks (which you can do by just coping the Favorites folder). Then paste it before the imported folders. After that, just delete all the imported folders. The bookmarks will be deleted, but you will still have a copy because you pasted it into a folder before the imported folders.

I attached some screenshots below showing the steps you need to take. First, press on the stacked books (number 1). Next, click on "Bookmarks" (number 2). Then press "Manage Bookmarks" (number 3). The next part might look different since we have different folders and bookmarks, but the steps are similar. First, press the Favorites folder to highlight it (number 4). Then click Command and C on the keyboard (to copy it). After that, click on the folder you want to transfer your bookmarks into. I assume you want to put the bookmarks into the Imported 5/9/21 folder, so click on that folder. Then on the keyboard, press Command and V to paste the Favorites folder into the one. Next, it's time to delete the folders you don't want. Since you have an iMac, press Control on the keyboard while clicking on the biggest folder you don't want (highlighted in number 5). Then press "Delete" (pointed to in number 5). The folders you don't want should then disappear. I hope this helps and that you get better fighting COVID!

Yep, I think you followed the steps correctly! It looks like the imported folders are gone now. Is this what you were looking for? For the mouse, what type are you looking for? Apple makes the Magic Mouse 2, which retails for $79.00 at this link: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MLA02LL/A/magic-mouse-2-silver?fnode=04fac21edc31e82640a7e489b0f93cad4a0d6eff9c8bf98cc44dd183ac94291d2c85f587588d17b26623877d4a5bbad0e1628337f6576785a8028d6492bce8fb941fe3a1e363580a36be71c44d9884feb779c32a90c0f6661103868585a7147f

This mouse does come with its own charging cable, which I believe should be the same as the one for your keyboard (depending on its model). Can I see a photo of your keyboard charging port?
