That's the exact same reason why i don't buy airtag. Because of this privacy thing it's useless. This way you must rely on the people's honesty and that's not so often possible. They steal your car/backpack whatever and when the thing announces/beeps it's done, the thief just take the airtag and throw it away.
I doubt its primary design consideration is theft deterrence. Privacy features would come ahead of that.
