I don't have an Apple TV, but am considering one. If I use the Apple TV device with the companion iOS app to calibrate my (Sony Bravia) TV do the changes affect the picture when I'm not actually using the Apple TV? I.e. Is the calibration process making changes to TV settings, or is it just doing some compensation in the Apple TV that only affects streaming?

It's specific to the Apple TV output , it is not changing any TV settings and will not impact other devices/inputs.
Note: There is no companion app, you will just get a pop up on your phone after initiating.

It sounds like the Apple TV calibration is actually a bad thing to do if you don't view everything through Apple TV. If you connect an XBox, cable box, HD OTA antenna, etc. you'd want to calibrate the TV itself, if you calibrate anything. Otherwise the TV calibration might conflict with anything the streaming box (Apple TV) is doing to calibrate itself. If you calibrated the TV well it shouldn't benefit from calibrating the streaming box. Ideally, it should detect that there's nothing to do.
It is specific to the Apple TV output and isn't changing any TV settings, so it will not conflict with anything. You can also have other things connected and you can calibrate the settings for those accordingly.
If the TV is already accurate then it will sense that and it will not be required.
Thats only true if you had a professional calibration done. And that goes from a couple hundred USD and up. What will happen is the Apple TV will be calibrated accurately and your eyes will notice that when you arent using the Apple TV. There are a number of articles online that talk about the difference being night and day between the Apple TV calibration and trying to do it by eye. With the Apple TV calibration being a superior image.
If your Bravia is one of the models with Dolby Vision you wont be able to calibrate anyway since Dolby Vision already has the correct settings
It will only impact your Apple TV. Your physical TV settings will not change.
