Screensaver photo orientation has changed

I have long used a Photos folder as the source for my screensaver, and things were happy until the update from 11.2.3 to 11.3. Now, one photo that has a vertical orientation is rotated counterclockwise to horizontal when shown in the screensaver. It has the correct orientation in Photos, and when selecting the folder in System Preferences, it also appears with the correct orientation. Even more strange, there are several other vertical photos in the source folder that still display correctly. Anyone else seen this or have a suggestion for a fix? (Rotating the image in Photos makes no difference.)

This problem also affects photos being used for desktop backgrounds. It would seem that, beginning with OS 11.3, the system started using only the original version of photos in the Photos Library, ignoring any edits, including rotations. A workaround is to export the desired photos to another folder and use that folder as the source for the screensaver or desktop.

Hey Timothy Wickland,

Thank you for the information.

Does it only happen when the photo is in the Photo Library?

Try creating a folder on your desktop by using the steps under the "Create a folder" section here: Organize files in folders on Mac

After the folder is created, export the photo to the folder by following the steps here in Export photos, videos, and slideshows from Photos on Mac Please note that you only need to do this with the photo that is having the orientation issue.

If you are still having the issue, you can Get Support here.

Take care!

I actually got into a very involved phone discussion with Apple Support. I started with a chat that evolved into a phone call that was pushed further up to a more knowledgable person who THEN told me she was going to have to contact engineering. She promised to follow up within 2-3 days. She actually did. Engineering acknowledged that they were aware of the problem and were working on it. I also had hoped the 11.5 would contain the "fix" but obviously we have been let down.

I'm also dealing with another problem that may be related. My library shows almost 11,000 pictures but my screen saver collection has a far more limited number that it is using. In one attempt to resolve the problemI was told to do something on my computer that showed me the actual count and IIRC it was nearer to 3K images. Sadly I cannot recall where I was nor can I find the conversation as it was transferred to my phone and I can't locate it on this discussion group anywhere. I'm also hopeful that the two problems are connected and that Apple WILL ultimately resolve it. Sadly, as we have already discovered, the problem isn't at the top of their heap~

OK, here's what I tried: I exported the photos in JPEG format to a new folder and used that as the source. That fixed the orientation issue, but now the pictures often start out at the wrong resolution before snapping into focus. Then, per Old Toad's advice, I reimported these photos to a new Photos library. I had to rename the folder to "Photos Library" before System Preferences would recognize it. However, when I selected that library, the screensaver said "No Photos."

I appreciate the workaround, but it doesn’t fully solve the problem in that any new photos you add to your collection won’t be there unless you periodically repeat the process. It also consumes a lot of space if you have a large photo collection.

I have had two fruitless support calls with Apple on this so far. Had me reset the NVRAM, reinstall the OS, rebuild the photo library, and a few other things. None of that worked. Found that if I created a new

user profile and downloaded the pictures from iCloud the problem wouldn’t occur, but couldn’t find a way to fix it for my existing user account.

Hoping Apple will get their act together and fix what is obviously a bug!

I had posted on this exact topic a few months back and actually started an online communication for a while but it got too long winded and I finally sort of gave up on it after investing a number of hours per day for a few days. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with the problem. I also have over 10K photos in my library and they worked flawlessly until the latest update. Not the orientation showing is the orientation the phots were originally taken in, ie vertical and rectangle that needed to be rotated and were, are showing on their sides in the slide show one though they are correct in Photos.

Hello Timothy Wickland,

We are sorry to hear that the orientation of your screensaver photo keeps changing.

When you mean screensaver photo, do you mean the photo that shows when your Mac is sleeping, or the picture that shows in the background when you are using the mac (desktop photo)?

Here is some information on how to Customize the desktop picture on your Mac

To customize the Screen Saver, follow the steps here in Change Screen Saver preferences on Mac

Have a great day!

I don't understand your advice. Is "Previde" just a typo for "Preview?" And, if so, I assume you mean the Preview button in System Preferences/Screensaver, since the Preview app can't open a Photos library, bur I don't see anything there can can enable rotating the view.

When I created the new Photos Library and selected it as the source for the screensaver, the images were visible in the selection window, but when I hit "Choose," the preview window said "No Photos." I had to stop the experiment because iCloud started downloading photos from my real Photos Library. (Thankfully, it didn't go the other way and replace the cloud version with the new, dummy Photos Library.) Clearly, this was a dangerous experiment I shouldn't repeat.

You do understand the "Typo" language!

That's the first you mentioned that you had the iCloud Library enabled. That's a whole new and different ballgame, one which I am totally unfamiliar with. The best persons to dive into this situation would be léonie.
