Bizarre HDCP error with Apple TV & Hulu since 14.5

OK this one is really weird. I upgraded both my Apple TV 4K's to 14.5, and immediately afterwards I am having issues with only one show on Hulu (Mayans) so far, and only on one Apple TV. The show starts and immediately freezes within the 5 seconds of playing. If I hit any button on the remote I get an HDCP error. I've tried all the usual fixes. Unplug HDMI connections, change HDMI cord, change HDMI ports on TV, deleted/reinstalled Hulu app, restarted AppleTV, unplugged both TV & Apple TV, and even resorted to resetting AppleTV to factory settings (though it starts now on 14.5?). Same issue...constant freezes. Mind you, it works fine on my other appleTV. It's only one show, so really not a huge deal and I've just been using airplay for now, but honestly it's more for my own satisfaction that I really want to figure our what is going on. It was working fine before 14.5, so it's definitely related to the update, and the only constant is the TV. Any thoughts or other options I haven't tried?

Thought I’d add my experience here in case it helps others. The fix for me was in Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content. I had to enable Match Dynamic Range AND Match Frame Rate in order for it to work. Enabling either one alone did not work. I’d never set either of these settings so I think they were off by default? Not sure about that though. Below are details about the problem show and my hardware.

Hardware:

Samsung TV, Model #UN65MU630DF (2ish years old?)

Samsung Sound Bar, #HW-MM55C

AppleTV —>HDMI—> Sound Bar —>HDMI—> TV

AppleTV, Model # A1842 64 GB

tvOS 14.7(18M60)

I began seeing this error after Hulu’s 7.32 update on 8/23/2021. I’d never seen this error before but I have seen numerous problematic Hulu updates on multiple platforms (android, Roku, etc). The only show that produced the error on was “Only Murders in the Building”, a Hulu original. I was able to fix our problem and watch the show without error (though now shows transition from app to video and back to app much slower than before). Maybe that will help some of you experiencing the error in similar circumstances.

So I'll share what I've found. Firstly, I will say Apple is looking into this. Actually have received multiple calls from Apple looking into the issue.

Anyway, when I initially upgraded to 14.5 on both my Apple TV's, I had the issue on both of them. At some point I did a factory reset on both of them and now Mayans works on one of them, but still not the other. I even swapped the Apple TV's and same problem on the same TV. So it would appear it's a combination of TVOS 14.5, some codec used on certain shows by Hulu, and possibly a certain HDMI specification?

I had this problem with the new Hulu show Only Murders in the Building. I fixed it on my Apple TV 4K 2nd generation with tvOS 15.0 by going to Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content and turning Match Dynamic Range off. I left Match Frame Rate on, but it also works with it off. My TV is a nine year old Samsung smart TV model UN55ES7150 LED 1080p.

Hi,

I have the exact issue.

I have two apple tv 4k devices, one running 14.4 and the other 14.5.

Right after the 14.5 update I got the HDCP error on that specific device, never seen it before, Netflix, Disney+, etc.

I tried everyting; different hdmi cable, new hdmi cable, reset, factory default, different video/audio settings, NOTHING worked.

Only when I connect a different tv set to the apple tv, it worked..... What ???

The device with 14.4 never has any issues.

Really, really frustrating.

I can’t downgrade the apple tv with 14.5, so what can be done next except throw it out of the window...

I have this error on the Apple TV 4K 2nd gen with both TVOS 14.5 & 14.6. Mayans & Legion don't work, but Mr Inbetween did. All were FX shows. Other apps & non-FX content works fine. My Apple TV HD works fine too. This Apple TV 4K doesn't work on the other TV either that has the working Apple TV HD. I also tried deleting & rensinstalling Hulu and disconnecting everything, waiting 30 seconds, and reconnecting everything too with no luck. Hulu support says 3 others are having the same issue. Both TVs are old, HD (1080p), non-smart, Samsungs. Airplay is a workaround.

I am also having this same exact issue just started happening today. It was only one show, and we had been watching the previous season with no issues. All of this started when we started season 7 of Younger on Hulu. Other Hulu shows work fine, all other apps work fine, in fact we had no issue playing the exact same show and episode through a different app (Paramount+).

As other posters have said I have an older TV that is not smart and is only 1080. I tried all of the the things in this thread between resetting the HDMI (not a fun or easy task with our built in home theater), unplugging all of the equipment in the signal chain, resetting the Apple TV, etc. the Apple TV was up to date (TV OS 14.6). Have had this Apple TV for only a few months and this is the first time we’ve had this issue.

Not sure if this is a Hulu problem or a AppleTV problem, but I never had issues like this on my Roku devices...

I have recently purchased the new AppleTV 4K with the Belkin Ultra HD High Speed HDMI Cable and I have been having this HDCP issue on most shows on Disney+ and selective shows on Netflix. I have tried all the troubleshooting suggestions from the Apple Community as well as those on the website out there. Changed 4 different cables, different HDMI ports on the monitor, factory reset the device but to no avail. Managed to watch only one show on D+ after troubleshooting and cannot get it work again after that. This is so frustrating. Is this a tvOS issue or what? My first AppleTV purchased and this is the experience Im getting.

Please let me know if there is any workaround available!

This morning I was able to successfully play shows that had not been working previously. It's been a while since I've watched any FX/Hulu content, so I'm not exactly sure when it was fixed or what fixed it. I did recently update to tvOS 14.7, but it was possibly a Hulu update as well. Regardless, the issue seems resolved for me.
