I just got a new laptop. How do I share my library with my desktop and my ability to download?

Home Sharing So if you’re home sharing from Catalina, and I want to either listen to music, watch a movie, listen to a book or podcast, I have to have all those applications open on the iMac ? I thought the sharing was separate now and so you just had to have the library attached (external drive) or am I misunderstanding ?
