What model and year Mac? use 🍎 > About This Mac, and post the specific Mac and year, amd we can tell you whether your McBook or MacBook Pro or MacBook Air or other Mac can be upgraded.

If you have OS X El Capitan 10.11, you might be able to upgrade. Upgrading to macOS Sierra 10.12 doesn’t make much sense, as any Mac that can upgrade to macOS Sierra 10.12 can also upgrade to macOS High Sierra 10.13.

Your Mac might be able to upgrade to macOS Mojave 10.14, macOS Catalina 10.15, or macOS Big Sur 11, too.

But your Mac may not be able to upgrade past OS X El Capitan 10.11. Again, please post the specific model and year, and we can help determine that.

Download the macOS version using Safari only. Do not use a different browser to get the installer.

Have a backup prior to the upgrade.

If you upgrade past Mojave 10.14 to Catalina 10.15 or Big Sur 11, all your apps must be 64-bit. No 32-bit apps work on 10.15 and later. This includes Microsoft Office 2011 and earlier. You will need to find 64-bit upgrades, or migrations, or retire the 32-bit apps, if you upgrade to Catalina 10.15 or later. If your Mac supports that upgrade. Use the Go64 tool to find 32-bit apps.
