Wallet draining battery in iOS 14.5

Has anyone else noticed that Wallet is draining battery quickly since 14.5 update? In battery usage it shows 1 minute or less of activity for Wallet but that it contributed to around 30% of battery use over a day. I have noticed it a couple days in a row.

I'm almost certain that this is a bug with Apple Card family sharing.

My iPhone (XR on iOS 14.6) and Apple Watch (series 3 on watchOS 7.4.1) have been draining battery way faster than usual the past few days. Normally they both last two days between charges, but have been lasting only 9 hours or so. I’ve tried restarting both devices, removing background processes, and updating the watch to watchOS 7.5. The same thing is happening on my wife’s iPhone (same as mine) and watch (series 6 on watchOS 7.5), even though there's not much in common with our phone/watch usage patterns.

I then noticed on the iPhone’s 10-day battery history that Wallet had used 35% of the phone’s battery life in the past week. This wasn’t showing in the 24-hour battery history for some reason, even though the battery decline was steady throughout the day. The 10-day history showed that battery usage was close to 100% on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday but not on Saturday or before Thursday.

I then realized that I had activated Apple Card family sharing a couple weeks ago and switched to it as my primary iCloud payment card, but no purchases had been made until Apple subscriptions auto-renewed this week. Those transactions happened on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, exactly when the battery drain was happening. I use Apple Wallet NFC with other cards all the time, but haven’t used the Apple Card other than these renewals.

Based on this, it looks like there’s a bug with Apple Card family sharing that’s draining battery only on days that the card is used (or maybe only on days that it has scheduled transactions). I’ve switched all payments off of that card for now, and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Ahh, I'm having the exact same issue! My 12 Pro Max and Series 6 watch have been working fine until this past Tuesday.

Checking the battery usage on the phone for the last 10 days, Tuesday the wallet app started to creep up in battery usage, with today being 70%. I haven't even used the **** app today...

I only noticed the issue because my watch is draining super fast, like 98% to 8% over 8 hours. I unpaired and repaired the watch to my iphone, no fix. Then I started to notice the phone is draining faster than usual. Currently trying the 10+ minute shutdown on the phone to see if that fixes the wallet drain. If that doesn't work, I plan on doing a full restore via iTunes.

Apple support was not very helpful when chatting, they asked about usage and how often/how long I charge it for. Did a diagnostics which came back with hardware being ok (not surprised, this is a software bug). They said I'd need to bring it into the store or ship it back for service (again, not sure what they would do other than reset it). I mentioned the possible link but was dismissed pretty quickly.

Hello, thejohnsonfactor. Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you have been noticing unusual usage from the Wallet app on your device recently. We’re happy to help you research a solution and find out what could be causing this.

There are several troubleshooting steps that we’d suggest starting with. First, please restart your device before charging it to 100% again. After restarting, test your device to see if you notice an improvement in battery usage. You can see how to restart your device in the following Apple Support article:

Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

If you continue to notice the same usage after this, we’d suggest that you follow these tips to maximize battery performance and help extend battery lifespan:

Batteries - Maximizing Performance - Apple

If you are still noticing unusual battery usage after this, we would suggest that you ensure the Wallet app is fully closed when not in use. Review the following Apple Support article to see how to close an app:

Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support

We hope this information helps you.

Cheers!

If you are experiencing same problem, I would encourage you to call Apple Support! They indicated to me that this was the first they heard of it. If others are having this problem, it helps for Apple to hear directly about it.

Interesting mention of AppleCard with family share. I also have an AppleCard that I recently shared with my wife. Wonder if that is a factor?

Same rapid battery drainage on iPhone & Apple Watches for both my husband and me over the last 48 hours.

Me: iPhone 8 running iOS 14.6 and Apple Watch 5 watchOS 7.5.

My husband: iPhone 8 iOS 14.6 and Apple Watch 6 watchOS 7.3.3 (holding off on the 7.5 update because my battery issues are worst than his...)

Just recently started using Family Share with my Apple Card. Both of us just recently turned Exposure Notifications on because our state only recently implemented their program.

My battery usage last 24 hours:

Wallet 37%

Exposure Notifications 20%

My husband's usage last 24 hours:

48% Camera

17% Safari

16% Exposure Notifications

For now, we are going to carry external battery with us so we can charge up our devices throughout the day until this bug is fixed by Apple.

I really don't understand what is going on but I do know that all of our problems were resolved after we physically gave my iPhone to a Genius Bar person and he returned it 5 minutes later. He shut the iPhone down and I restarted it about 10 minutes later. My husband and I have had no issues with any of our batteries in our watches & iPhones after that.

Our nearest Genius Bar is within walking distance of our home so that was a super convenient option for us. If that option is not convenient for you, I recommend that you stop sharing your Apple Card with your family and rebooting your devices. That should fix the problem.

I would strongly recommend anyone having this issue submit a ticket in the feedback app, describing battery drain on watch and phone from the wallet app when an apple card is used with family share. The more instances of this happening being reported, the more likely it will be addressed. Currently my ticket is saying "no recent similar reports".

The online chat person also insisted I bring all 4 of our devises (husband's and my phones & watches) into the Genius Bar. When we got there it was only my phone the technician examined. Not sure if he did something else besides shut my phone down. If the 10+ minute shutdown does not solve your problem, I would take it into the Genius Bar. Not sure why we aren't getting more information on what is going on and why the online support folks are insisting we bring our devices in.
