Big Sur "Update" drive icon

I'm still running Catalina on my 2015 iMac. I installed Big Sur on an external SSD which I will eventually put into the iMac. Now when I boot into my iMac using the Catalina drive, a drive icon named "Update" pops up on the desktop. Update contains two empty folders: "Controller" and "Firmware", and a file named restore.log. Can anyone tell me what this is and how I can delete it? Thanks.

It is how Big Sur stages Updates.

Catalina does so in a folder in /Library.

Open Disk Utility,

Select the Updates volume,

Click the Remove Volume button ( – )
